What is the Higgs boson

The Higgs boson and the god particleWhat is the Higgs boson?
It 'called the' God particle 'but physicists prefer to call it the Higgs boson, named after the British Peter Higgs, who in 1964 had predicted the existence.

The Higgs boson is the particle that provides mass to all other subatomic particles of matter which we are also formed. Without the Higgs boson would be very different from matter as we know, and perhaps not exist at all .... is the last brick of which the contemporary physics needs to complete its main theories, called the Standard Model.

The Standard Model (SM) is a quantum field theory that describes three of the four known fundamental forces, namely the strong, electromagnetic and weak (the last two unified electroweak interaction) and all elementary particles associated with them. The gravitational force is the only one not to be described by the model.

This is a sort of "catalog of matter" which predicts the existence of all the essential ingredients of the universe as we know it. Includes 24 elementary particles organized into two families: the quarks and leptons, which are the real building blocks of matter (found in the infinitely large, as in the galaxies, the same as human beings in the microscopic world).

It also includes a family of 12 other particles, which are the messengers of the four forces of nature (gravitational, weak, electromagnetic and strong) that act in the infinitely small. The messengers provided by the Standard Model are six in all: Z, W +, W-, gluon, photon, Higgs boson. The bearer of the gravitational force (Graviton) is not part of the Standard Model.

All these components of the subject would be lifeless without mass: the Higgs boson, which forces them to interact and to aggregate.

The Higgs boson would finally been discovered. The announcement was made official Wednesday at a seminar at CERN in Geneva, which presents data collected from two experiments accelerator LHC (Large Hadron Collider) that for some months are chasing the elusive 'God Particle', the 'ATLAS experiment (A Toroidal LHC Apparatus) and CMS experiment (Compact Muon Solenoid). These are devices that are observed in proton-proton collisions at very high energies that the LHC occur, analyzing the particles that were produced.

The Director General Rolf Heuer of the center: "We took a major step in the understanding of nature. The discovery of a particle consistent with the Higgs boson opens the way for more detailed studies, which require more statistics, and that we will discover the properties of the new particle, possibly throwing light on the mysteries of the universe "
