Meaning of the symbols Megaliths

In all the Celtic regions, from Ireland to Central Europe, the sacred sites were often consecrated by the erection of a pillar of wood or stone, an expression of vital energy, its form probably derived from the desire to represent the tree, a particularly powerful symbol among the Celts.

On the other hand, many of these megaliths wanted to express the brute strength and primitive associated with the phallus: it may be that often desolate areas were found where they served to mark the boundaries of fields.

Sometimes they were laboriously turned and decorated with engravings, such as stone Turoe, dating from the Iron Age and found in County Galway in Ireland, which bears the curvilinear motifs typical of Celtic decorations.
